Snow Emergency + Trash Pickup Slides

Due to the snow today, Howard County has declared a snow emergency. In addition, many County services have been cancelled or delayed, including trash pick-up.

That means that trash and recycle will slide one day this week:

  • Trash: Wednesday
  • Recycle: Saturday

Per Howard County:

Residents are reminded that trash, recycling and yard trim receptacles must be placed at the curb free of snow and ice. Collection personnel will not dig residents' containers out from under snow or ice. Collections can occur between the hours of 6 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Notices from Howard County Government's Facebook page are reposted here for your convenience:

Snow Emergency Rules In Effect:

(10 AM) Per Maryland State Highway Administration, a snow emergency has been declared in Howard County. Once a snow emergency is declared, the law requires certain precautions. They include:
- Prohibited parking on roads and streets designated as snow emergency routes; and
- The use of snow tires/chains (most cars now use all weather tires, so changing to "snow" tires is unnecessary).
Once a snow emergency is in effect, all requirements are in effect until lifted. Please stay tuned to http://www.chart.state.md.us/Storm…/snow_emergency_plans.asp for updated informtaion.

Clearing Snow:

(11 AM) Property owners who abut a sidewalk please keep the following in mind: per Howard County Code, Section 18.402(h), "It is the duty and obligation of the owner of property abutting a sidewalk in a public right-of-way to remove snow from the sidewalk within 48 hours after the snow has fallen."

Trash Pickup Cancelled for Tuesday:

(11 AM) THIS JUST IN: the County's trash, recycling, food scraps and yard trim collections have been CANCELLED for today, Tuesday, January 6. All collections will slide and be made one day later this week: Tuesday moves to Wednesday, Wednesday moves to Thursday, Thursday moves to Friday, Friday moves to Saturday. The County's Alpha Ridge Landfill however remains open today, normal hours from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. For more information, please visit www.howardcountymd.gov/inclementweather.htm.
